After graduating with an MA in International Relations (with a concentration in conflict resolution) from Yale University in 1990, he joined the United Nations Department for Disarmament Affairs.Eric subsequently served as the Assistant Spokesman for the UN Transitional Authority in Cambodia (1992-93), the Special Assistant to the Director-General of the UN Office at Geneva (1994-96), the Political Affairs Officer for the UN International Commission of Inquiry (Rwanda, 1998), and as a Visiting Researcher at the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (1998-99).

After leaving Switzerland in 1999 for the United States, he worked mostly as an independent consultant for numerous governments and academic institutions, including the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs, King's College of the University of London, the UK's Department for International Development, and the US Institute of Peace.He was also a Visiting Fellow at the Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.
