Peter Abbarno, executive director of the Vermont State Republican Committee, said the letter was not intended to offend or discredit Republicans who voted for civil unions.
"Those who voted for civil unions should be secure in their vote. This should not be a threat to them," Abbarno said.
But Abbarno promised that civil unions would be one of several issues Republicans would use during the campaign to "take back the Legislature" this November. He noted the civil unions vote was "largely along party lines," with Republican House members endorsing the bill by a 59-16 margin.
"We have heard overwhelmingly from our constituents that they want the party to take a stand" on civil unions - just as it has done with Act 60 and other issues, Abbarno said.
He added that the party this election would nonetheless support Ginevan and other Republican candidates who voted in favor of civil unions.
