   His surname says it all; Marilou Diaz-Abaya, director of Rizal and Sa Pusod ng Dagat, and Manolo Abaya, cinematographer of Karnal and Brutal, are his parents. But these cinematic legends conspired to keep their son out of show business. "I was kept in the dark about what my parents did until fourth year high school," recalls Abaya.

"Today I still see the haters boo excellent hip-hop band while clapping for rock bands that suck," notes the rocker. The adolescent Abaya bought into this divisive thinking. "I hated Eraserheads music; I was with the Razorback camp," he admits. It is with absolute irony that former Eraserheads lead guitarist Raymond Marasigan soon recruited Abaya to be part of group that fused rap, grunge, electronica and punk, the band Sandwich.

   "He is my father figure," the 25-year-old Abaya says fondly of the 30-something Marasigan.

   Recently, Abaya left Sandwich to focus on his career as VJ for MTV and his new band Kjwan. "We said goodbye like a family," he confesses.

   As for once wanting to be Jim Morrison, Abaya now realizes, "To be a rock star is to fall from grace, to live without conscience or regret.
