   Leo Abaya, in his third solo exhibit, explores the possibilities in the idea of the painting ground, the canvas for instance, as a location or a place for images and moreover, for images as a place for other images.
   
   With contemporary and colonial photographs, prints and illustrations of and about the Philippines as sources, and taking off from the fundamental binary of visual perception, the figure-ground relationship, he reworks images and the spaces that contain them with the intent of expressing how figure and ground, past and present, the important and mundane, the clear and unclear interrelate and intertwine in getting grips with our identity.
   
   Born in Manila and raised in Bohol, the artist obtained his BFA (Painting) magna cum laude at the UP College of Fine Arts in 1995 and his MA Painting at the Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton, United Kingdom in 2004.
   
   He has had two solo exhibits and has joined several group shows in Manila, New York and London. In addition to private collections here and abroad, his works are in the University of the Philippines Art Collection by commission and the Singapore Art Museum by purchase.
   
   A member of the faculty of the UP College of Fine Arts, he is also a designer with several awards to his name for his works on film.
