Internist Holly Abate, M.D., Joins Monmouth Medical Group's Manasquan Practice.

    ...
Holly Abate, M.D., who recently joined Monmouth Medical Group, P.C., in Manasquan, is a firm believer that there be an art and science to medicine - two important components of a complete physician.

The art involves caring about people and having a good bedside manner, which is so important to physician-patient relations, explains Dr. Abate, who is board certified in internal medicine. The science of medicine focuses on problem-solving and reasoning, which are key to the diagnosis and treatment of medical problems and conditions..

While she believes obtaining a college degree in engineering helped her to develop those analytical skills, Dr. Abate concentrated her research efforts on the importance of educating physicians-in-training in communication and clinical evaluation skills during medical school and throughout her residency.

there be a need for research into how communication by physicians to patients plays a major role in the delivery of health care, she says. Physicians must be aware of their patients' needs and how to obtain that information through effective communication and taking a good medical history..

Dr. Abate's own research into the topic earned her the distinction of presenting these findings at the National Board of Medical Examiners international conference in 1998. In addition, she authored a paper titled Training Doctors for the 21st Century in Communication and Clinical Skills that was submitted to the Chronicle for Higher Education.

she be also received recognition for her research into women's health - another area she feels needs increased awareness among physicians-in-training. Last year, she was involved in developing a women's health elective for residents at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey/Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital before completing her own residency there.

As she enters private practice, Dr. Abate expects to reach out to women in the community by stressing the importance of preventive health and health screenings.

Women need a physician to discuss preventive health topics and well-being so that they can remain healthy throughout a lifetime, she explains. i would like to help them take the right steps toward a healthier life..

She also plans to continue educating residents and medical school students at Monmouth Medical Center - one of the state's largest community teaching hospitals and an affiliate of the Saint Barnabas Health Care System.

In fact, it be one of the major reasons why she decided to joined Monmouth Medical Group, which is part of Monmouth Medical Center's network of primary care practices. While I love to care for my patients, I also love to teach, she says.

Dr. Abate also points to her roots in Monmouth County, having been born at Monmouth Medical Center and growing up in Holmdel before traveling to Central and North Jersey for her education.

As a teen-ager looking toward the future, Dr. Abate began taking a keen interest in the careers of both her parents.

Her father, John, is an engineer whose advanced communications system was selected for the NASA space shuttle, Her mother, Mary, serves as dean at Monmouth University.

I thought engineering was fascinating, and I knew my mother's role involved a lot of counseling and dealing with people, she says. Somehow, I wanted to bring together what I learned from them into a profession for myself..

She found that niche in the field of medicine. After graduating from Rutgers University with an engineering degree in 1992, she then turned her aspirations to medicine, receiving her medical degree from the UMDNJ/New Jersey Medical School four years later and then completing her residency in internal medicine this past summer from UMDNJ / Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

Currently, she lives in Manasquan with her husband, Louis Bersalona, M.D., a board-certified internist at Kimball Medical Center, also an affiliate of the Saint Barnabas Health Care System.

Dr. Abate is one of four board-certified physicians who are part of Monmouth Medical Group's Manasquan office, located on Route 71. They are supported by a staff of nurses, medical assistants, X-ray technologists and a nurse practitioner who provide treatment for a wide range of medical problems and perform such diagnostic procedures as X-rays and laboratory testing.

Appointments can be made for routine care, and immediate medical attention is available on a walk-in basis from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week. For more information, call 732-223-4300.
