CROWLEY - Lloyd Francis Abadie, 87, a native of Edgard and a resident of Crowley since 1972, died Wednesday, May 10, 2006 at Southwest Medical Center in Lafayette.Abadie graduated from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge in 1938 at which time he moved to New Orleans.During World War II, he served three and a half years in the Army Air Force in radio communications with various tactical units in this country and abroad.He participated in the Battle of the Bulge serving at times as French interpreter.After his military service, he returned to New Orleans.Taking an avid interest in organized conservation work, he was elected president of the New Orleans Sportsmen's League in 1950 and again in 1955.He was a life member of the Louisiana Wildlife Federation and served as its president for two consecutive terms in 1957 and 1958.At this time, he began writing outdoor articles for various newspapers and outdoor magazines.He was a former president of Louisiana Outdoor Writers Association.He was also a member of Outdoor Writers Association of America and Southeastern Outdoor Press Association.He subsequently moved to Crowley in 1972 and became associated with Bayou Bend Country Club.He organized the local chapter of Ducks Unlimited in the early seventies and continued his pursuit of outdoor writing.Locally, his outdoor columns appeared in the Lafayette Advertiser, The Crowley Post Signal and served other newspapers across the state.His outdoor radio segment was aired on KSIG in Crowley.In 1991, he was Commodore for the Louisiana Gulf Coast Association Fishing Rodeo.That same year, he received a certificate of appreciation for outstanding and dedicated service to the Cajun Chapter of Ducks Unlimited.In 1994 he became the first recipient of the Charles "Chuck" Buckley Awards for "Outstanding and unselfish contributions to the Louisiana Outdoors Writers Association."In appreciation for a lifetime of dedication to Wildlife and Natural Resources, he was presented with the Sportsmen Emeritus Award by the Acadiana Sportsman's League in 1995.Abadie will be remembered not only for his love of the outdoors, but also for his belief in teaching gun safety to the young hunters of Acadiana.
