THE BRONG Ahafo Regional President of the Ghana Traditional Caterers Association (GTCA), Mr. Kinsley Hayford Ababio has urged traditional caterers to improve upon the quality of food sold for public consumption in order to complement the efforts of the Ministry of Tourism and the Modernization of the Capital City in wooing potential tourists into the country.
Mr. Ababio observed that since quality food is the basis of good health, it would be better for those in the industry to ensure better local dishes being served in the country.
He said that traditional caterers play a pivotal role in the tourism industry, because most of the tourists visiting the country would like to have first hand information about the local dishes and by doing this, have to taste the food, adding "the quality of the food tasted would increase their patronage."
According to him, the main aim of the workshop was to sensitize the traditional caterers on the need to prepare and sell food in a very hygienic atmosphere.
He regretted that traditional caterers do not add any value to their food, and stick to only the primitive ways.
Mr. Ababio was speaking at a sensitization forum at Odumase near Sunyani as part of the ongoing nationwide programme to educate traditional caterers on the need to be hygienic.
He said tourism today runs second to cocoa in revenue generation for the economy of Ghana and added that it was in view of this that the government has decided to sponsor forums such as this and urged that, in order to attract more tourists into the country, traditional caterers should improve upon their food quality.
He said the recent food poisoning in the Sunyani Municipality has really deterred both the natives and travelers from eating outside and added that this goes a long way to tarnish the name of the hospitality business in the Municipality.
