Nita Aasen earned her undergraduate nursing degree from the University of Minnesota School of Nursing and a master's in Health Science from Minnesota State University, Mankato. She has worked in hospitals in both rural and urban settings as a nursing instructor, and for the last sixteen years in public health.Working in the obstetrical unit, medical surgical areas, and the emergency room brought a myriad of contacts with those confronting death and dying, loss and grief. As a nursing instructor at a small private liberal arts college, she brought these educational and clinical experiences to the classroom.Years later, when her two young adult sons, Erik and David, were killed in a freak car accident, she learned how little she truly knew about grief.
Many of Nita's essays have been published in two national grief support magazines: We Need Not Walk Alone, a publication of The Compassionate Friends, Inc., and Bereavement magazine.Beginning with the November/December 2003 issue, Nita became a regular columnist for Bereavement magazine.
Nita lives with her husband, Paul, in St. Peter, MN.Her surviving son, Kevin, resides with his wife, Pam, and three children, Michael, Derik, and Jenna, in Vernon Hills, IL.
