Granddaughter and daughter of Lutheran pastors and wife of Joe Aalbue, pastor of Family of Christ Lutheran Church in Vancouver, WA, Sally's heritage and role in life is ministry. She graduated from Augsburg College and earned her MA from the U. of Washington in Seattle. She was an educator for many years so it was natural to be interested in working with the Chinese teachers. After a family trip to China in 2000 to trace the ministry of Joe's uncle, Josef Paul Aalbue, Sally fell in love with the people and the land. She believes that the best diplomacy and ministry is achieved through love and friendship. She and Joe served on the 2005 education team.

"The population is growing," said Josef Aalbue, pastor of Family of Christ Lutheran Church.

"It reflects the ministry we have now and projected ministry we anticipate," said Aalbue.

While multi-purpose facilities and classrooms are not entirely new to churches, the way they are being built has changed. "Form follows function," said Aalbue. "I have noticed some really interesting facilities being built in the Vancouver area," he said.

In addition to sparking questions, Sept. 11 struck at the heart of our sense of security, said Pastor Joe Aalbue of Family of Christ Lutheran Church, which also will have a Sept. 11 remembrance service. He worries that the reaction of some people has been to withdraw and perhaps look for people to blame. Still, some good has come in the wake of the tragedy.

"I think there is a renewed value of those folks who serve in police, fire and military. And while I'm not sure there have been any lasting impacts in terms of a return to faith ... perhaps for people of faith, there is more of an understanding that our final security for people of faith rests with God."

When asked how people will respond to the Sept. 11 anniversary in years to come, Aalbue said, "I don't think I'll ever forget the pictures of the towers falling. That's impressed in my mind and heart. But there will be other things that will call our attention or distract us. So it will be a day that folks acknowledge like Pearl Harbor, but a lot of the passion (may be) lessened."

Added Maier: "I hope it will stay more present in our civic conversations and religious conversations. I think it's important to commemorate this day because it is on people's minds here still."
