Melanie Pelan Aalbers was born in Ireland and moved to San Diego in 1976. Melanie attended Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration and received a B.S. in Hotel Administration (Market Concentration) in 1992. She began her career in hotel operations with ITT Sheraton in La Jolla and then New Orleans. She left her position as Total Quality Management Manager at the Sheraton New Orleans to pursue an M.B.A. and transition into hotel development consulting. Melanie received her M.B.A. (emphasis in finance and entrepreneurialism) in 1997 from Loyola University in New Orleans. She then joined PKF Consulting in Los Angeles to perform hotel and resort feasibility studies nationwide.
In 1999, Melanie moved to San Francisco to become an asset manager with SCS Advisors, the owner's representative for numerous Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton, Marriott, and Westin properties worldwide. Intrigued by the dot com buzz in the Bay Area, she left the hotel arena in 2000 to gain business development experience in Silicon Valley as Director of Partnership Services for ImproveNet. After the downturn in the Internet arena, she moved to San Diego with her husband, native San Diegan Brian Aalbers, and published a selected audience magazine designed and written especially for area visitors and distributed primarily in hotel guestrooms.
