From 1946 to 1949 , Tom Dillon rode the street car to and from St. Mary High School every day with other classmates from Kenmore and Barberton.His fond memories include Sister Francis who taught history , Sister Xaveria , who taught chemistry , physics , solid geometry and trig , and Sister Domitilla , who taught a special class during lunch hour for four boys whom Sister Domitilla believed showed promise in math.
Sister Domitilla was right.Tom went on to the University of Akron where he graduated in 1953 with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration.In the ensuing years , Tom became the builder/developer of more than 200 banks , libraries , churches , schools and hotels.Using his patented Dillon System , he has built more than 50 , 000 apartment units.Tom achieved not only quantity but quality when he won the American Builder magazine's National Quality Model House Award in 1959 , and served as president of the Akron Homebuilder's Association.
Tom's impact has also been felt internationally.In 1970 , his company was one of 22 selected for Operation Breakthrough , an international building competition sponsored by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development.He has sold Dillon System building licenses in Mexico , Yugoslavia , Saudi Arabia and Iran , supervised building projects in Singapore and Iran , and consulted on the development of a housing project in Costa Rica.
Tom is president and owner of Akron-based Executive Properties , Inc. , a management company overseeing 600 apartment units in the Akron area.His business expertise was recognized by the University of Akron when they presented him with the Frank L. Simonetti Award for Distinguished Business Alumni in 1995.
Although his professional life has been full , Tom found time to marry his late wife , Patricia and to raise their seven daughters.Today he lives the live of a modern Renaissance man - still involved in business , actively supporting civic and parochial efforts , and pursuing his avocations of flying , golf , hiking and keeping up with his 22 grandchildren.He is currently a vice president of the James A. Michener Society based in Greeley , Colorado.

Dillon joined the HBA in 1956 and was president in 1963. He served on the original Home and Garden Show committee, chaired and developed the HBA's first single-site Parade of Homes almost 50 years ago and is one of the founding fathers of the HBA, as it is known today. According to HBA officials, he currently is a managing partner in the Sheraton Suites Akron/Cuyahoga Falls, in addition to running his property management and development company.
