Governor Copps is a member of the Board of Governors of New Westminster College. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with Honours (Cum Laude) in English and French from the University of Western Ontario, took further postgraduate courses at McMaster University and L'Université de Rouen, and has been awarded a Honourary Doctorate from the University of Saint Anne. Governor Copps is fluent in several languages, including English, French, Italian, (written and spoken) and Spanish (some spoken).
Governor Copps made political history in Canada when Prime Minister Chretien appointed her after the 1993 federal election as the first female Deputy Prime Minister of Canada. Her distinguished political career included several cabinet-level leadership positions, including Minister of Environment, and Minister of Canadian Heritage responsible for Multiculturalism, Sport, Official Languages, Status of Women and Parks.
Governor Copps served in the Canadian federal government as a Member of Parliament and Minister from 1984 to 2003 as a member of the Liberal Party of Canada. She understands and possesses a deep knowledge of the inner workings of Canadian federal and provincial governments, having served in both levels in executive and parliamentary capacities.
Governor Copps managed several portfolios with budgets upwards of 3.2 billion dollars and had direct Cabinet responsibility for 15 government agencies with a total of more than 20,000 employees. She previously served as an Ontario Provincial Member of Parliament and assistant to the Leader of the Opposition from 1977 to 1984.
Governor Copps rewrote departmental guidelines to provide clarity and transparency to more than 60 granting programs with a budget base of 700 million dollars. She established national environmental assessment legislation which serves today as an international model, and also established the International Network on Cultural Policy, which paved the way for the UNESCO Convention on Cultural Diversity.
Governor Copps presently serves as the president of Sheila Copps and Associates located in Ottawa, Ontario after becoming a nationally syndicated columnist and broadcaster after leaving politics in 2004. Governor Copps is a published author of two books and numerous magazine articles and scholarly publications, including Worth Fighting For (2004), La Batailleuse (2004), and Nobody's Baby (1986). She is also a contributing author to the Norwegian Language publication on UNESCO cultural diversity instrument.
In addition to serving as a Governor of the Board of Governors of New Westminster College, Governor Copps serves on several other boards, including: President of the National Press Club Foundation, Advisory Board Chair of the Canadian Fund for Understanding through Culture, Chairperson of the Asian Canadian of the Year Award, Chairperson of the Friends of Haiti, Board Member of the Eurovision Cultural Association, Member of the Trillium Camp Board, Member of the Famous Five Advisory Board, Member of the Equal Voice Advisory Board, and Member of the Bruce Trail Association Advisory Board.
Governor Copps has received numerous honours and awards including: Award of Distinction from King's College University, Achievement Award by the Canadian Council for the Arts, Achievement Award by the Canadian Nature Federation, Achievement Award by the Canadian Association of Broadcasters, Lifetime Achievement Award by the Hamilton Tourism Association, Lifetime Achievement Award by the Association of French-Speaking Parliamentarians, and Induction into the Hamilton Gallery of Distinction. She has been listed in the World Who's Who, honoured by the Republic of Korea, received Lifetime Membership by the Korean War Veterans, and honoured by the Monarchist League of Canada, and Eurovision Prix Henrik Ingeberg.
