He started his career in 1972 with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) where he served as a scientist, director of two research centers, director general for eastern Canada, and chief scientist, international, until his retirement in 2011. Dr. Martel holds a Ph.D. in Soil Science from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, and a Certificate from Harvard University for the Making Corporate Boards More Effective program. He was an invited university professor in Canada, Morocco and Honorary Professor in three Chinese universities. He is also an independent review expert for the European Commission. Dr. Martel earned several distinctions nationally and internationally, including Gold Harvest Award for outstanding career achievements from AAFC, a Doctorate Honoris Causa from Laval University, the Knight of the Order of Agricultural Merit from the French Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries of France, and the Friendship Award by the Chinese Government to foreign experts for outstanding contribution to the development of China. Dr. Yvon Martel holds a B.Sc. in agronomy from Laval University and a Ph.D. in soil science from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada. He has Certificates from the University Queen’s Executive Program, Canada and on ‘Making Corporate Boards more Effective’ from Harvard University, US.
He started in 1972 a scientific career with the Science and Technology Branch of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) as a soil scientist and subsequently as director of Research Centres , Director General for Eastern Canada and Chief Scientist, international. He retired in 2011 and is a speaker on agriculture science management and an independent review expert for the European Commission.
Dr. Martel has a long experience in agricultural science management in Canada and internationally. He developed partnerships with industries, universities, different levels of government and institutions of several countries. He was the Director of a Potato Research Project in Brazil and the Chair of the Governing Body of the OECD Co-operative Research Program. He was invited university professor in Canada, Morocco and awarded Honorary Professor of three Chinese universities.
Dr. Martel earned several distinctions nationally and internationally including Gold Harvest Award for outstanding career achievements from AAFC, a Doctorate Honoris Causa from Laval University, the ‘Knight of the Order of Agricultural Merit’ from the French Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries of France and the ‘Friendship Award’ given by the Chinese Government to foreign experts for outstanding contribution to the development of China.
