He started his career in 1972 with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) where he served as a scientist, director of two research centers, director general for eastern Canada, and chief scientist, international, until his retirement in 2011. Dr. Martel holds a Ph.D. in Soil Science from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, and a Certificate from Harvard University for the Making Corporate Boards More Effective program. He was an invited university professor in Canada, Morocco and Honorary Professor in three Chinese universities. He is also an independent review expert for the European Commission. Dr. Martel earned several distinctions nationally and internationally, including Gold Harvest Award for outstanding career achievements from AAFC, a Doctorate Honoris Causa from Laval University, the Knight of the Order of Agricultural Merit from the French Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries of France, and the Friendship Award by the Chinese Government to foreign experts for outstanding contribution to the development of China. Yvon Martel
Dr. Yvon Martel, who retired from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) in December 2011, was one of seven personalities recognized this year by Laval University for their profound impact in their respective fields. Laval University, on June 17 2012 bestowed upon Dr. Martel a doctorate - honoris causa, for his exceptional contribution as researcher, manager and chief scientist, international, for the Research Branch of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Under his leadership, AAFC spurred an expansion in partnerships with provinces, universities and industry. Dr. Martel with his team increased the profile of Canadian agricultural research in the international arena by developing numerous international MOU's , new initiatives such as the student and scientists foreign exchange program, very successful with China, and the creation of the twinning scientific concept with European Commission. This recent honor crowns a great career in agricultural research and top-notch mentoring for a generation of scientific researchers and managers. Dr. Martel is well known to AAFC staff for his leadership as Director General, Eastern Region, 1987-2002 and Chief scientist of the International Scientific Cooperation Bureau from 2003 to 2011 and as the coordinator of the celebrations for the 125th anniversary of the Research Branch in 2011. Martel earned several distinctions nationally and internationally. AAFC recognized his outstanding career achievements with a Gold Harvest Award in 2010.
