TMC's Project General Manager (Research and Development Management Division) Yutaka Matsumoto had earlier said the company is working on a number of models, including bio-fuel, natural gas and hydrogen vehicles as part of its global strategy to grow in the alternative technology market.
It would soon start leasing about 500 Units of Prius with lithiumion battery in Japan, the US and the European Union countries. Matsumoto had also said that TMC would be setting up a new battery research department as part of its efforts to accelerate R&D activities for modern and efficient battery.

Yutaka Matsumoto, Project General Manager, Toyota Motor Corp.: Wireless energy transfer for automatic driving is very important in our view as well.
Matsumoto: All manufacturers are developing auto-drive technology. Even Toyota has been working on it for a long time.

Toyota's project general manager of research and development, Yutaka Matsumoto, said 500 plug-in Priuses would be leased throughout Japan, Europe and the US with the view to monitoring the vehicles in everyday use and gauging feedback from drivers.
"To use the remaining oil [in the world], improving fuel efficiency is the highest priority," said Matsumoto. Unlike a Prius, which runs purely on petrol (but uses as little as half that of a similar sized vehicle) the plug-in hybrid version can run for longer distances on electric power and be recharged from a regular powerpoint. While it looks identical to a Prius - albeit with stickers to highlight its technical advantage - it uses more efficient lithium-ion batteries and a modified version of the Toyota hybrid system. "While it operates as an electric vehicle in short distance driving it automatically shifts to a conventional hybrid vehicle with excellent fuel efficiency in mid- and long-distance driving," said Matsumoto. Unlike the rival Chevrolet Volt that's due on sale in 2010 - and to be sold in Australia as a Holden Volt from 2012 - the Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid can use the petrol engine to drive the vehicle. The Volt's petrol engine will only be used to recharged the batteries when they run low. Matsumoto says hybrids are a key plank to reducing fuel use. "Although hybrid vehicles only account for less than 4 per cent of our sales, they contribute to a 12 per cent reduction in CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions from our vehicles." Consistent with moves to use alternative energy Toyota says it will adapt the Prius to run on other fuels. "Our future plug-in hybrid vehicles using bio-fuels and solar power generation will have the possibility of helping to realise completely carbon-free motoring," he said. Matsumoto says a dedicated battery research division is looking to improve the range of li-ion batteries to 200km by 2020. Car makers have long said that the limiting factor of batteries is their bulk and weight and relatively short range compared with a fuel tank. He says Toyota is also researching new battery technologies with the view to significantly increasing efficiency and driving range. However, like other brands, Matsumoto says conventional petrol and diesel will continue, even in the longer term due to the requirements of heavier vehicles and commercial vehicles. "Diesel is a needed technology in some segments," he said, which also saying that the increased costs associated with making diesel engines meet future emissions regulations would play in to the hands of petrol-electric hybrid vehicles, which are more affordable than ever. "At some time hybrid can be more cost effective than diesel," said Matsumoto.
