Yancey McGill, a Democrat from Kingtree, was first elected to the position of President Pro Tem.
McGill was immediately sworn in as Interim Lieutenant Governor, losing his Senate seat in the process. Later in the day, Republican State Senator Hugh Leatherman was elected to succeed McGill as President Pro Tem. McGill was the only member of the Senate who seemed interested in taking the Lieutenant Governor job: he was unopposed in the race to be President Pro Tem.

Yancey McGill says he's willing to be lieutenant governor, Senate delays vote
Yancey McGill says he's willing to be lieutenant governor, Senate delays vote Yancey McGill, who appears to have settled the succession issue for lieutenant governor by agreeing to take the job. McGill isn't challenged today, his decision will mean the end of his 26-year Senate career. He would cap it off, incidentally, by becoming Senate president pro tempore ever so briefly as he gets in line for the lieutenant governor's job. He would serve as lieutenant governor only until January.
