"That means an opportunity to save four lives or more, and we never hesitate-even though it means a 20-hour shift," says Memorial Paramedic Supervisor Winston Shields. TDS
provides organ and tissue recovery services to 25 hospitals in 12 counties. When a donor is identified, Winston or one of the other supervisors will dispatch an ambulance to the hospital, pick up blood and tissue samples, and take them to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.
"The team comes running to the ambulance," Winston
says, "and we rush them to the hospital and wait as they run in, remove the organ they can use, place it on ice in a cooler, and race back to the ambulance for transport to their plane."
