These are some of the many questions we hear about Admiral Windwagon Smith, the official ambassador of Riverfest. The Admiral's story begins with an American tall tale. Some say that Captain Smith and his Windwagon were only a legend, but wagons with sails were an actual part of early Kansas prairie history. Admiral Windwagon Smith XLI_Steve Adelson
The legend became a reality in modern times when the Wichita River Festival adopted the Windwagon and its skipper (now promoted to Admiral) Windwagon Smith as their standard bearer. Sam (Shipwright) Mobley, with much arm-twisting by his wife Margaret (assistant festival director at this time) designed the original Windwagon.
Candidates for Admiral Windwagon Smith are nominated each year by the Wagonmaster Trail Bosses, the Past Admirals and the WFI Board of Directors, with the final selection made by the Past Admirals.

History of Admiral Windwagon Smith
The film was about the legendary Admiral Windwagon Smith, who sailed across the prairies, in his windwagon. The western theme and the design and creation of a windwagon were all elements which helped establish the theme for the Wichita Wagonmasters, a group that was formed to primarily serve as support for the Festival organization as well as to serve as official hosts for the city. A design for the windwagon was drawn, which included a sailing ship with wheels for prairie travel. After completing the drawing, Star Lumber volunteered to donate all the materials except the antique wheels which were purchased at an antique store in El Dorado. Approximately two months were spent on the construction of the windwagon. The first Admiral Windwagon Smith was John Bell
Admiral Windwagon Smith is an important symbol of the Wichita River Festival, serving as an ambassador for the Festival, but not the official spokesperson.

Some say that Captain Smith and his Windwagon were only a legend - not entirely so - wagons with sails were an actual part of early Kansas prairie history. You can find pictures of them in Kansas history books.
Wonderful Walt Disney brought it all to life in a movie cartoon in the early 1940's with the famous western quartet, The Sons of the Pioneers singing the story from Doggerel of an Old Sea Dog, ships log of the original Captain Windwagon Smith, who fancied himself a bit of a Poet.
Then it all became real when the River Festival adopted the Windwagon and its skipper (now promoted to Admiral) Windwagon Smith as the standard bearer.
Admiral Windwagon Smith is nominated each year by the Trail Bosses, the Past Admirals, and Wichita Festivals, Inc. Board of Directors, and then the selection is made by PAWS.
