William S. Widnall, appointed in 1974 as the first American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) congressional Fellow, spent his year on Capitol Hill working on NASA-related issues for the House Committee on Science and Technology. In summing up his experience, he said that he hoped his involvement had "increased the confidence of the members and the staff that engineers can make a valuable contribution on the Hill.Perhaps future staff openings more often will go to engineers."He also thought AIAA benefited through its expression--via the sponsorship of Fellows--of service to the Congress, which had in turn "increased the respect of the Congress for the AIAA.
Other members of the class of 1974-75 included Kevin Cornell (AAAS-Rockefeller), who worked for Senator Gary Hart; Lloyd Craine (IEEE), who worked for the House Committee on Science and Technology; Jerome Harper (AAAS), who worked for OTA; Allan Hoffman (APS), who worked for the Environment Subcommittee of the Senate Committee on Commerce; Thomas Moss (APS), who worked for Representative George E.
