Dr. William Salathiel

Associate Director and Energy Program Lead
William is a versatile business and technology consultant with education in chemistry, physics, thermodynamics, molecular spectroscopy, finance, accounting, marketing, and management. He has accumlated 25 years of broad experience consulting on technology and business problems, and 20 years of petroleum industry research experience. Recent consulting engagements have included vetting technologies and start-up management teams for clean power production, transmission, and storage; and alternative methods of transportation fuel production. Other consulting spanned venture organization, marketing, personnel selection, search, and compensation, mergers & acquisitions, and technical problem solving. Earlier, he did industrial research in the areas of surface science and surfactant development; and petroleum production related to well completions (fluids, sand consolidation, gravel packing), well stimulation (acidizing, fracturing, diverting), pipeline friction reduction, asphaltene & paraffin deposition, reservoir processes, surfactant enhanced oil recovery, and polymer gel diversion of reservoir floods.

William currently serves on the board of Digital Ordnance Storage, Inc., a Texas company developing software and hardware targeting the rapidly expanding data transmission and storage requirements of cloud computing, big data, and supercomputing. Recently, as an Associate Director at San Francisco merchant bank Jane Capital Partners, he provided consulting services supporting venture transactions and strategic technology advisories for major power and energy companies with interests in emerging and competitive alternative energy technologies. Advisory engagements provided clients business and technology overviews and engagements with emerging players in batteries, fuel cells, energy/power storage; solar, wind, geothermal, nuclear, and hydro power; and a range of petroleum production and processing technologies. Dr. Salathiel is a founder and principal with Optimal Resources LLC, a Houston based consulting firm providing management and technical consulting services to technology based companies and investors. For 25 years the firm has provided management consulting relating to commercialization of new technology; marketing; venture organization and finance; strategic alliances; mergers & acquisitions; and related personnel selection, search, and compensation. Industries served included Energy, Chemicals, Engineering, Construction, Environmental. Technical areas dealt with include hazardous waste thermal destruction, hazardous waste vitrification, water purification and ion concentration, tire rubber recycling and energy utilization, high performance activated carbon, proximate subsurface imaging, catalytic cracking of waste plastic, selective separation of chemical species, high temperature materials, plastics applications, fluid behavior, and interfacial/colloid/emulsion science. Business consults have included petroleum drilling ventures, petroleum property acquisition reviews, business brokering, business planning and business formation for several start-up companies. Prior to entering private consulting Dr. Salathiel was employed by Exxon Corporation for 20 years, initially with Exxon Chemical Company performing R&D and marketing support for specialty/performance chemicals used as process aids in petroleum production, refining, chemical processing, coal mining, paper manufacture, and tar sands oil production. With Exxon Production Research Company, Dr. Salathiel worked in Enhanced Oil Recovery, Well Completions, Workovers, and Well Operations. He researched surfactant flooding, polymer mobility control, and deep diversion of reservoir floods with polymers. He studied asphaltene deposition from crude oils and developed methods for controlling them; developed a hydraulic fracturing process based on ultrahigh viscosity emulsions and annular viscoelastic flow; studied the behavior of polymeric flow improvers used in pipeline and hydraulic fracturing operations; analyzed the thermal performance of fluids and insulated tubing strings in various well operations; studied the time behavior of filter cakes; and developed autodegradable particulate materials for diverting oil well stimulation treatments. In order to reduce the influx of sand into flowing wells, Dr. Salathiel developed an epoxy resin based process for consolidating productive incompetent sand formations; developed gravel packing processes; developed a device for faithfully sampling the concentration of solids entrained in flowing fluid streams; and developed processes for radially extending the treatment of oil sands using hydrofluoric acid to stimulate production and prepare sand surfaces for plastic sand consolidation. Dr. Salathiel also served as an international consultant and lecturer in Exxon schools on the subjects of polymer-based Reservoir Fluid Diversion, Sand Control, Well Stimulation Treatments, Completion & Workover Fluids, Asphaltene and Paraffin Deposition, and the Physics & Chemistry of Interfaces, Surfactants, and Colloids. He has twelve US Patents and related foreign filings related to petroleum production. Dr. Salathiel earned a BS in Chemistry from Lamar University, and a PhD in Physical Chemistry from Rice University (Studies In Microwave Spectroscopy) under Nobel Laureate, Professor R. F. Curl, Jr.
