William DeSilva: Senior VP and GM at Bermuda Gas and Utility
"I believe the CMA designation has provided me with a wide array of skill-sets necessary to make sound, effective business decisions", says William DeSilva Jr., CMA, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Bermuda Gas and Utility.
In the job since October of 2001, Willie feels comfortable with the challenges facing the organization because of the capabilities he honed through his time as a candidate for the Certified Management Accountant's designation.
From Family-Owned Business to Subsidiary of Integrated Energy Co.
Bermuda Gas & Utility Company Limited, established in 1936, is a distributor of commercial and residential propane gas and operates a service and appliance sales centre in the island nation.Bermuda Gas was purchased by the Bermuda Electric Light Company Limited in November, 1994, and a year later ownership was transferred to BELCO Holdings Limited, also now the parent company of Bermuda Electric Light Company Limited and BELCO Energy Services Company.
"There was a great transition here, from a family-owned business to a subsidiary of an integrated energy company", says DeSilva."The organizational culture, as well as the business processes, went through a metamorphosis in a relatively short period."
The challenges continue, according to Willie."We are currently embarked on broadening our revenue base through the analysis and development of new market opportunities, and defining our optimum product and services mix."He believes his CMA training fits neatly with the tasks at hand: increasing productivity, enhancing employee accountability, implementing a performance evaluation system and ongoing training initiatives to enhance employee skills.DeSilva also points out that BGU is streamlining its supply chain and distribution channels, and consolidating plant and facilities to reduce costs and increase operational efficiencies.
St. FX Alumnus and Member of Second Graduating Class in Bermuda
Willie DeSilva is a 1983 graduate of St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. After graduation from St. FX, he returned home to Bermuda where he has held several senior positions in the financial, management and telecommunications sectors. Most recently, he served as Managing Director and Chief Financial Officer of Paragon Management Ltd. and Director and Chief Financial Officer of Paragon Trust.Willie also spent one year working as Vice President, Finance & Administration for Quantum Communications Limited, which was partly owned by BELCO Holdings Limited.Recruited in 2001 by BGU, Willie is thrilled with the opportunities his new position affords him.
A member of the second graduating class of CMAs accredited entirely in Bermuda by CMA Nova Scotia, Willie has remained committed to the organization."CMA Nova Scotia was the first professional accounting organization to provide all aspects of accreditation on the island and, as such, has built a solid reputation in the country."
A member of the governing Council of CMA Nova Scotia, DeSilva is direct about the contribution of the organization."I believe CMA Nova Scotia's presence in Bermuda, training Bermudians, is very important to our nation's continued development as a global financial services centre".He adds, "Moreover, there is tremendous interest here about the new CMA-MBA program and its applicability to the issues we face in Bermuda as a player in the global economy."Clearly, Willie DeSilva will be exploring ways to make this new program available to his fellow Bermudians.
