Unadilla Police Chief William Cook said the crash occurred about 7:21 p.m. at the south end of Richmond Airfield, at 19935 Doyle, near a creek.
Police and Fire Departments responded to the scene, where residents tried to put out fire from the crash with buckets of water.Firefighters extinguished the fire with foam.Cook
said there were no witnesses to the crash at the airstrip, used primarily for glider planes and the Sandhill Soaring Club
.Small planes occasionally land on the strip, he
said.The Federal Aviation Administration
identified the plane and is investigating the cause of the crash.
The Livingston County Coroner's Office will make a positive identification of the pilot, Cook
said this is the first fatal plane crash in Unadilla
, which sits on the Livingston County-Ingham County border, north of Washtenaw County.
