But while Swiss pharmaceutical giant Roche plans to increase production of the heavily-stockpiled drug, William Chui, a local health expert, said that simply increasing the dosage of Tamiflu may not be a sensible solution, given the report's conclusion that the virus could be resistant to the drug.
Chui, education director at the Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Hong Kong's Drug Education Resources Centre, said upping the Tamiflu dosage would "only exacerbate the problem of Tamiflu stockpiling."
The government aims to have at least 20 million capsules of the drug, enough to treat 15-20 percent of the population in the event of an H5N1 pandemic.
The government has 3.5 million capsules on hand, with another four million expected early next year.
Chui said it would make more sense to explore the possibility of new combinations of drugs, or an injectable version of GlaxoSmithKline's Relenza, another drug that is said to be effective against bird flu, but is now only available in an inhalable form.
