Today's match was refereed impeccably by Alan Wilkie, the former FA Premiership referee, now retired and acting as a refereeing observer, who lives locally.
Following on from the previous couple of friendlies where the referee's have come in for some criticism, Mr Wilkie's handling of the match was pretty much faultless and in good spirit. He even had time to engage in some banter with the visiting fans! An example of how it should be done.

In this extended version of an interview from Gooner issue 153, Greg Tyndall meets former Premiership ref Alan Wilkie to get some memories and opinions. Alan Wilkie is an ex-Premiership referee who is perhaps best remembered for being the man who dismissed Eric Cantona at Selhurst Park, an incident which led to the famous kung-fu kick into the crowd.Alan was also in charge of some games that will live long in the memory for Arsenal fans.Amongst others he was involved in the 3-2 victory at Chelsea when Kanu scored an incredible hat-trick to overturn a two goal deficit. He was also the referee at Old Trafford in 1998 when Marc Overmars scored the only goal of the game to give Arsenal the three points they desperately needed to begin their charge towards Arsène Wenger's first Double. Little and Large?Alan Wilkie in his reffing days with TAFirst things first Alan, who do you support? (Alan did tell me who Mike does support but out of respect for his privacy I agreed not to print it, but put it this way, there is no love lost between Man U and the team Mike supports.) Finally Alan.It looks as if Faria Alam might be about to reveal the name of a third bigwig at the FA with whom she claims to have had an affair. Was the affair with you and if not can you tell us who it was with? No comment! I would like to thank Alan for taking the time to talk to me and wish him continued success in his role at the FA as referees assessor.
