Coach Wilbur Sasser
The New Bern Sun Journal, 1 May 2005 [cached]
HAVELOCK - After spending 29 years in the athletic department, Havelock athletic director Wilbur Sasser recently found out the he will not see a 30th.
"Wilbur is a legend at Havelock High School," Murphy said.
I think the world of Wilbur. We're good friends."
Sasser, who will continue to teach driver's education at Havelock, admitted that he'll miss the responsibility, but also said that he understood Murphy's decision.
"I want the absolute best for the Havelock athletic program, and if the people in charge think it'll be a little bit better without me, then, hey, that's the way it needs to be," Sasser said.
Sasser has been the athletic director for the past eight years. He also coached the football team for 25 years, compiling a 207-76-3 record.
Sturm and Sasser have been friends since Sturm began his coaching career at Havelock, with Sturm noting that it's hard to take over Sasser's old position.
"I've known coach Sasser since 1980," Sturm said.
"We have been friends an awful long time and I know in my heart that (Sturm) didn't do anything to make this happen," Sasser said.
Sasser said he was surprised by the news, but the biggest challenge for him is that he won't be directly involved with athletics.
"You'll also miss the relationships with the other coaches," Sasser said."That's going to be the hardest part for me, the fact that I don't have any realistic connection to the athletic department at Havelock High School."
That doesn't mean that Sturm won't come to Sasser for advice.
"My heart's always going to be with Havelock athletics, and I'm always going to wish the best for it," Sasser said.

Former head coach Wilbur Sasser was honored Friday afternoon as the Havelock Rams Booster Club formally dedicated Wilbur R. Sasser Field with a wooden sign in front of the goalpost serving as a permanent tribute to the Rams' winningest coach.
Sasser was in high spirits during the brief dedication ceremony, demonstrating his trademark sense of humor as well as his sincere gratitude.
Sasser, who has a lifetime record of 207-76-2 after taking over as the Rams' head coach in 1979, said the symbolic gesture will help ease the difficult transition from coaching to retirement.
"It was an unbelievable honor," he said.
Under Sasser, Havelock won 11 Coastal Conference 3-A crowns and routed its larger rivals to emerge as the Big East 4-A conference champ in 2001 -- a season during which Havelock made the leap from being a 3-A school to a 4-A-dominated conference.
Sasser also piloted the Rams to six undefeated seasons, including a 35-game win streak that lasted from 1986 until 1989.
But despite all he's given the team, Sasser said he has benefited the most from his coaching career.
"I was the lucky one for the 25 years," he said.
The good, the bad and the ugly, that describes Wilbur," she said."We're presenting the good here today.
