Wilbur Becton, now president of Havelock Communities Improvement Association, was still in high school in 1970 when that group helped purchase the school from the county for $1,000, then found grant money and held fund-raisers to refurbish it.

The center now houses a vigorous Head Start Program in addition to the senior activities and is open for birthdays, wedding receptions and an assortment of functions as a logical, local gathering place for this rural community.
An average 22 of the 46 senior participants come five days a week to play games, gossip, learn and participate in arts and crafts, Healthy Seniors activities, and have a balanced meal.
"There are some who come here that really depend on this meal," said Becton.
