Hildebran mayor Wendell Hildebrand discusses heritage development plans for the community while visiting the Hildebran history museum, temporarily housed in the old elementary school.
...Built in 1917, the former one-room school house evolved through the years with the buildings used for education for more than 70 years, said Mayor Wendell Hildebrand.
It ceased to be a school in the late 1980s, and after sitting vacant for several years with roof leaks and broken windows, it was almost torn down."There was a debate over tearing the building down and with a 3-2 vote a new roof was put on," Hildebrand
said, and the town offices moved in.
We are now looking at the building being renovated and brought up to code," Hildebrand
said.If it's possible, loft apartments could be included in the original building, he
said, "To me, this is a symbol of our town like the courthouse is to Morganton and the Waldensian Church
is to Valdese."In addition, the town hopes to have the former depot donated back to the town and relocated to the town complex where everybody can see it, Hildebrand
said."We're not just looking to the past, but developing things for the future. This will be the center of town and it will help our economy, not just the present economy, but the future," Hildebrand
said of Icard Township.
"You have to dream before it becomes a reality, and right now we're dreaming," Hildebrand
