Sweetwater Housing Authority Board Chairman Wayne Key issued a statement on Tuesday saying Barnes has been censured.

www.advocateanddemocrat.com

According to Sweetwater Housing Authority Board Chairman Wayne Key, Barnes' letter was in response to HUD's solicitation of comments on proposed rule changes, as is standard HUD procedure when new regulations are proposed.
In a prepared statement and in a telephone interview with The Advocate & Democrat, Key said Barnes' letter was meant to express her management concerns over the regulation changes, if approved, that would move from a more traditional definition of family to a definition defining it as "a group of people who choose to live together." Key said the Housing Board, not the mayor, has the power over Barnes. Key said the board does not deny a problem with Barnes' letter. According to Key, she used a poor choice of words. Key said Barnes and the board will fully follow any laws as has always been the case. According to Key, Barnes was formally reprimanded, and must now get approval from at least two housing board members before sending out anything other than routine letters. There will be formal evaluations of Barnes' performance, Key said. Key said Barnes has apologized to her board, the Mayor and Board of Commissioners, and anyone offended by the letter. Key said Sweetwater Housing Authority has consistently received positive ratings in HUD assessments and audits.
