On Monday, Director of Schools Dr. Keith Hickey and Principal Wayne Key gave The Advocate & Democrat a tour of the new school that has eased the overcrowding in the city school system's lower grades at Brown and Sweetwater Elementary School.Key said the school's public grand opening in August was a true community event.

"I think you'll find a safe, warm and happy place," Key said.
Key, the former principal of Sweetwater Elementary School on Broad Street, said the new school was designed to handle future growth with more than 82,000 square feet.

According to Sweetwater Housing Authority Board Chairman Wayne Key, Barnes' letter was in response to HUD's solicitation of comments on proposed rule changes, as is standard HUD procedure when new regulations are proposed.

In a prepared statement and in a telephone interview with The Advocate & Democrat, Key said Barnes' letter was meant to express her management concerns over the regulation changes, if approved, that would move from a more traditional definition of family to a definition defining it as "a group of people who choose to live together."
