Nation Newspaper Barbados, 31 May 2003 [cached]
Before the election campaign began in earnest, Dr Wayne Greaves, a Barbadian and a recognised HIV/AIDS expert in the United States, looked at how Barbados was dealing with the disease. He liked what he saw.
"The new HIV/AIDS Commission under Dr Carol Jacobs is doing some very good work," he said.
As Dr Greaves, a former Professor of Medicine at Howard University in Washington, but who is now a researcher at Scherring Plough Pharmaceutical Corporation in New Jersey explained it, the involvement of the Prime Minister's office in the anti-HIV/AIDS campaign sent an important message at home and abroad.
"Whenever a leader, the top of a government becomes involved it ripples down the line," he added.
"As someone visiting Barbados periodically, you can see a difference in the way the disease is being approached and the efforts that are being made to control the disease."
Dr Greaves, a former student of Harrison College who later served as a HIV advisor to major health agencies in the United States, including the United States Centers for Disease Control and the National Institutes of Health, wants the private sector to become even more involved in the drive against the spread of the disease.

Wayne Greaves , the former chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Howard University Hospital , replied to one such letter in a memo dated Oct. 8 , 1985 : This is in response to your letter dated September 15 , 1985 , and your interest in therapy for AIDS.I appreciate the work that your ( sic ) doing in your area of the country and I am pleased to hear of your successes. As a scientist however , I am never totally convinced of any therapy unless it has been studied under controlled conditions.Still , it is hard to argue with your success.Time and research may indeed teach us that the cure for AIDS lies in herbal medicines or chemicals derived from herbs. At the present time I remain skeptical but open-minded..
