Voices That Must Be Heard: Caribbean immigrants in New York a special target for AIDS - New York Community Media Alliance [cached]

Dr. Wayne Greaves, a prominent research scientist at a major pharmaceutical firm in New Jersey and a scientific adviser to the U.S. National Institutes of Health, believes that the problem of HIV/AIDS infection among men and women has always existed and therefore is not something new. He insists that the problem was overlooked for years because the federal, state and local governments in the United States, Caribbean nations and international agencies had directed almost all their resources on reaching the 15- to 45-year-old age bracket, virtually ignoring the sexually active people in their 50s, 60s and 70s.

"There was a lot of concern about teenagers being promiscuous and people tended to assume that it wasn't an issue for people who were much older," Dr. Greaves said. "As a few people started to look, they were surprised to find that there was HIV among the (older) population. As we often find, if you look harder you find more cases."
According to Dr. Greaves, now that the focus has broadened and all age groups are under scrutiny, there is an increase in the recorded cases.
"We have to understand that as long as people are sexually active, no matter what age, there is always going to be the risk that HIV transmission can occur if you have sexual intercourse with someone who is infected. It doesn't matter your age."
Greaves has also taken a cautious approach to suggestions that there was a rise in bisexuality and HIV infection among Black men in the United States and the Caribbean, thus fueling the epidemic. Dr. Greaves said that again this wasn't new.
What may be new is the fact that more people are coming out of the closet, both with their sexual lifestyles and their HIV infection.
"We have always known that because of the stigma (about homosexuality) in the Black community, there is a number of Black men who tend to be homosexual and bisexual and that has always been a potential risk for Black women," said Dr. Greaves. "We have always known that.
