They were men of means and education, said Capt. Wayne Bley, a Naval Reserve officer serving as deputy Joint Staff chaplain for the Chairman of the Joint Staff in Washington, on Sunday at South Park Baptist Church as part of its All-American Heritage Memorial Day celebration. They may have had security, but they valued liberty more, he said.
Also a Baptist minister, Bley, whose job is to research and counsel the Joint Staff on policy regarding foreign and domestic religious matters, reminded the packed church that the reason the United States is where it is today is because of religion, whether people recognize that or not.
"We identify our flag and behold it, emblazoned with all our rights," Bley said.
