Tears for fallen comrades: Keynote speaker Warren Aas of Milbank said although aging veterans have wrinkled skin and young veterans have smooth skin, the same things can be seen in their eyes."No matter whose eyes you look into, you will see a tear for fallen comrades and a hope for peace," said Aas, the American Legion's state service officer. He praised those who took the time to attend the ceremonies."As long as we continue to have gatherings like this today, we can be confident our nation will survive and thrive for many years to come. ... Calvin Coolidge once said, 'The nation that forgets its defenders will soon be forgotten."And he praised U.S. soldiers for being tough and gentle."They are world-class fighters with compassionate spirits," Aas said. They're known for extending hands of compassion in orphanages, hospitals and school playgrounds wherever they're serving, he said. The Rev. Richard Riedel of Aberdeen expressed similar sentiments in his invocation."None of the men and women we are honoring fought a war to conquer and enslave any of Your children," he prayed.
