About Dr. Peters
Dr. Walter Peters specializes in breast enhancement surgery, facial cosmetic surgery and liposuction.
Breast enhancement surgery includes: breast augmentation with cohesive gel implants and breast lifting (mastopexy).
Facial cosmetic surgery includes: facelift, eyelids (blepharoplasty), and liposuction.
Dr. Walter Peters received his MD degree with Honors, and his Plastic Surgery Fellowship (FRCSC), both from the University of Toronto. He received his PhD degree from the University of British Columbia. Subsequently, he was awarded a McLaughlin Traveling Fellowship for further training in Boston.
Dr. Peters has had a Plastic Surgery practice in Toronto for over 20 years. He is currently on staff at Mount Sinai Hospital and St. Michael's Hospital. However, his surgery is now done in his own surgical facility - The Rosedale Centre for Plastic Surgery, at Bloor and Sherbourne, in Toronto. Dr. Peters opened this facility in 2001. It is unique, because it has a hospital license. Surgery is done under general anaesthetic, intravenous (twilight) sedation, and local anaesthetic. Patients from across Canada, The Bahamas, and elsewhere, may choose to stay at one of the many hotels nearby. Canadian plastic surgeons are not permitted to operate on patients from the United States, unless they are Canadian citizens.
For 15 years, from 1984 to 2000, Dr. Peters was the Director of the University of Toronto's Adult Regional Burn Centre, at the Wellesley Hospital, where he coordinated the treatment of over 2,000 patients with major burns. The University of Toronto has recently named the Annual Walter Peters Burn Symposium Lecture in his honor. From 1984-2000, he was also the Chief of Plastic Surgery at the Wellesley Hospital.
Since 1990, Dr. Peters has been the Course Director and Coordinator of the largest aesthetic plastic surgery symposium in Canada - the University of Toronto Annual Symposium for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Each year, over 250 plastic surgery professionals, from Canada, the United States, and abroad attend this meeting.
Dr. Peters has been awarded over $5 million in research funding. He has published over 160 papers and book chapters, and has presented papers at over 300 national and international meetings.
For the past 10 years, Dr. Peters has been the Coordinator of an international research study involving 3,000 women who have received silicone gel breast implants. In Washington, D.C., he is a consultant/advisor to the FDA, the National Academy of Science, the National Cancer Institute, the Institute of Medicine Study on the Safety of Breast Implants, and the FDA Public Health Project. He is also a member of Health Canada's Expert Panel on Breast Implants and Health Canada's Scientific Advisory Board.
Dr. Peters is a member of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario Task Force, to define the guidelines for Plastic Surgery Independent Health Facilities. He is also a Facility Inspector for Surgical Facilities in Ontario.
Dr. Peters is Full Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto. He has supervised the training of 11 Clinical Fellows, 28 Plastic Surgery Residents. He has received many research awards, including the prestigious "Lister Award", for the top surgical scientist at the University of Toronto, performing long-term research at the international level. He has been a consultant/expert witness in over 35 breast implant cases.

"I think they have gone totally overboard," said Dr. Walter Peters, a professor of surgery at the University of Toronto. Radical jaw surgery in the United States and Canada, he added, "could sometimes be done for cosmetic reasons but it is usually done for developmental or post-traumatic reasons."
