Radio Systems' senior program manager, Walt Frankewich, whose firm is selling the collars under the PetSafe brand name, said the serious pet owner is the market the company is trying to reach."For those people who think of their pets as their kids, it is a revolutionary item," he said."But for those whose pet is just a dog, it is not.We really are going for the people passionate about their pets. And that seems to be a fairly large market."Frankewich said the product works this way: An owner sets up a home zone in which the dog is allowed to roam.Once the animal leaves that zone, the owner will be alerted automatically by e-mail or a telephone call.Frankewich said the 7.4-ounce collar, which came out late last year, is designed for dogs 30 pounds or heavier. The technology is not available to make them small enough for some breeds, he said.Frankewich thinks the price of the collars and service likely will go down."It will be like the cell-phone market," he said."When they first came out, not everybody had cell phones. But now everybody does."Frankewich added that his company has been pleased with the sales and customer satisfaction so far.
