...But School 7 Principal Wakili Moore was glad for warmer than usual temperatures Tuesday, as he was spending the day on the roof of the Bryan Avenue school to fulfill a promise he made to his students at the start of the school year.
"If they read 3,000 books, I said I'd spend the day up here," he
said, standing on a narrow, pebbled ledge on the Dewey Avenue side of the building."They've surpassed it.They've read 4,500 books."
First-graders chanted "To the roof!To the roof!"before Moore
tossed candy to them to celebrate Halloween, while keeping his
promise to stay on the roof from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
We just wanted to give them something different," Moore
In addition to a bullhorn, a two-way radio and a red folding chair with yellow and black balloons attached, Moore
brought books to read while on the roof.
The project "has excited the whole school," said Moore
