The three other plants are in Lynchburg, Va., Greensboro and Hickory, said W.H. Reeves, the president of Carolina Steel, based in Greensboro.

The Winston-Salem plant at 1725 Vargrave St. has about 25 employees, Reeves said.
Reeves said that the company is getting out of the structural-steel business for commercial and industrial buildings so it can focus on its more profitable business of supplying steel for bridges, which accounts for 70 percent of the company's revenue.
"It's a little slow right now," Reeves said of the bridge business."It will come back faster than commercial-industrial."
Reeves said that the market for steel for commercial and industrial buildings has been in a slump in recent years in part because the economy has been soft.
He said that part of the market will bounce back, but not for at least two years.
"We don't foresee it coming back until 2006, 2007," Reeves said.
Reeves declined to disclose revenue or profit figures for the company.
...
Reeves said that the company has not set a deadline for a sale and that it will keep running the plants until new owners take over.
