Virginia L. Harrod, MD, PhD
...Virginia L. Harrod, MD, PhDDr. Harrod, a native of Central Texas, attended The University of Texas for her undergraduate degree.After graduating, she pursued a doctoral degree in Pharmacology and Toxicology at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center through The University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in Houston.Her
research project involved investigating the use of novel bioreductive drugs in the treatment of solid tumors.Dr. Harrod then went on to obtain her medical degree from The University of Texas Medical School at Houston.
After medical school, she
returned to Austin and completed the pediatric residency program at Children's Hospital of Austin
then moved to Memphis, Tennessee where she
fellowship in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
. As Medical Director of the LIVESTRONG Survivorship Center at Dell Children's Medical Center, Dr. Harrod has focused her research efforts towards the late effects encountered in survivors of childhood cancer.She
also continues to have strong clinical research interests in solid tumors and neuro-oncology.During fellowship, she
participated in research evaluating the long term effects of therapy in sickle cell disease, as well as coagulation and thrombosis, investigating safety and efficacy of new treatment protocols.
When not working at the hospital, Dr. Harrod
enjoys spending time outdoors, especially camping and hiking with her
husband and two children.
