As soon as doctors Vince and Vance Moss emerged from the chartered jet at Kabul International Airport, they were whisked through Afghan customs and escorted to a local security crew eager to help them with their medical supplies.
Vince, a cardiothoracic and trauma surgeon at Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland, and Vance, a urologist and kidney-transplant surgeon joining Crozer next monthnov, are a pair of a kind.
"We tried to determine whether our practices could survive with us in Afghanistan or, if not, where should our commitment be at this time in our lives," Vince said.
"We wrote letters to a number of people in the Department of the Army explaining our mission," Vince said."The reaction was, 'Great idea, Vince and Vance, but we can't support you fully on that because it's never been done before.
Vince put the girl on intravenous antibiotics and told the father to take her to the Afghan National Army Hospital in Kabul. She needed a proper operating room to debride the dead tissue.
The father was adamantly opposed. The Afghans won't treat her, he insisted. He refused to take her unless do ga na ge (pronounced doe-GA-na-ghee) went, too.
"We were like, 'You've got to be kidding me,' " Vince recalled.
Another influence on Vince was Vance, and vice versa.
"When we would go through these poppy fields and the drug lords would stop us, our concern was, 'Are they going to shoot us because think we're here to tell on them?' " Vince said.
Vince recalled a baby who was struggling to breathe.
"We took an X-ray, diagnosed a diaphragmatic hernia, and repaired it," he said, pointing to a photo of a cherubic face beneath a knitted hat.
Vince and Vance Moss changed our life."
At Crozer-Chester Medical Center, Vince and Vance have ambitious goals.
"When I interviewed Vince, I said, 'Why here?' There are a lot of opportunities for someone like him, with more money," recalled William Mannella,cq Crozer's chair of surgery.
"A lot of our friends who are opposed to the war ask us, 'Why are you in the military?' Well, my brother and I are military men first and foremost," Vance said as Vince nodded. | Essence Do Right Men, 30 July 2006 [cached]
DOING RIGHT: Last fall, these identical twin surgeons and Army reservists volunteered to leave New York City and go to Afghanistan to provide medical treatment to injured civilians.Despite the challenge of having to perform surgeries using light from their cell phones or flashlights-not to mention the constant threat of random gunfire-their dedication to saving lives never faltered."It's easy to label the Afghans as terrorists," says Vince (standing), a cardiothoracic surgeon at Kimball Medical Center in Lakewood, New Jersey."But I see them as people who need health care just like the rest of us."Vance, a urologist at Stony Brook University Hospital, says: "As we were growing up, when people implied that we wouldn't succeed in accomplishing our goals, we used that doubt as a catalyst to defy the odds and to help others do the same."
WHAT MAKES BLACK WOMEN SPECIAL:"Their self-sufficiency and grace," says Vince."Their positive outlook," says Vance.

People would be hard-pressed to find a more dynamic set of twins like Vince and Vance Moss.
Vance, a fellow in transplantation medicine at Stony Brook University Hospital, is a board-certified urologist and wants to specialize in kidney transplantation.
"Scouting had a tremendous influence on the things we did and the goals we set for ourselves," Vance said.
"We could have gone in a lot of directions while growing up, but Scouting offered the ideals and values we wanted to attain," Vance said
The patients would chant "donanagee," which means 'same face healers' in Farsi," says Vance Moss.
