"We're most concerned," Vince LaBarbera, a spokesman for the Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocese , said.
LaBarbera said a priest disappearing without telling anyone isn't common.
"I suppose there's been in the past various reasons priests leave. Some maybe announce to the congregation or talk with the Bishop and want a sabatical, but in this case, that didn't happen," LaBarbera said.
LaBarbera added that another South Bend priest is filling in at Father Carboneau's church until "someone can be appointed later this year."
He said Father Carboneau wouldn't automatically be able to return to his parish when he's found.
"It would be up to the Bishop [to decide] if he is fit and able to return to his parish or another one," LaBarbera said.
