Says Dr. Vijay Swarup, MD, FACC, FHRS the founding partner, and director of Arizona Heart Rhythm Center specializing in treating all disorders of heart's electrical system.
There are monthly fluctuations in the occurrences of certain arrhythmias, palpitations are a significant source of discomfort and concern to female patients, and there are certain risks of "standard" cardiac treatments in women that need to be factored into arrhythmia diagnosis and treatment says Dr. Swarup. Heart arrhythmia and irregular heartbeats affect millions of Americans, and it can lead to many health risks including heart failure, stroke, and sudden death. The medical field of Heart Rhythm specialists is the most rapidly growing field because of the new technologies which allow effective and often curative treatments of heart arrhythmias," Swarup said. "We are currently involved with roughly 25 clinical trials. We are able to give our patients access to these new treatments, devices, and technologies. Says Dr. Swarup who is an active researcher and has authored numerous articles and is continuously involved in the development of newer therapies treating various heart conditions. By surrounding themselves with a hardworking team of heart rhythm experts, Dr. Swarup and Dr. Makkar have built The Arizona Heart Rhythm Center into a world leader in the treatment of heart rhythm disorders. Now, doctors like Swarup and Makkar are able to pinpoint exactly where the heart's electrical impulses are misfiring causing arrhythmias. "It's just like a GPS navigation system," Swarup says of the mapping technologies, which use a combination of ultrasound, x-ray, and magnets to triangulate and thereby find exact locations of distress inside the heart's chambers and help navigate the catheters or electrical wires to such areas. Several of the arrhythmias like atrial fibrillation cause blood to stagnate in small chambers of the heart forming blood clots, forcing many patients to stay on blood thinners to avoid strokes. "The Copenhagen Heart Study showed that women with atrial fibrillation had an increased risk for stroke and cardiovascular death as compared to men. This is particularly true in women over age 75. Says Dr. Swarup. Dr. Swarup and his team at AZHRC were the pioneers in development and testing of a heart plug which was recently approved by the FDA for preventing strokes in the patient with irregular heart rhythm called atrial fibrillation.
