IT was a Tour marathon Victor Espiritu really thought he had little chance of winning.
There he was, already 31 years of age, up against the big guns of yesterday, todayand tomorrow, and unfit one and a half weeks before the start of the race becauseof a flu-stricken, aching body.
Somehow, he found the will and the way to overcome the odds and come face to face withhis destiny, and once more proved that the heart of a champion can't easily betorn apart.
Espiritu formally laid claim to the Padyak Pinoy 2007 Summer Showdown crownyesterday in a triumph as historic as his first one, becoming only the eight man to win thecountry's premier summer saga on wheels twice by a margin that was one of theslimmest.
"Ito talaga yung sinasabi ko na kung hindi ukol, hindi bubukol," said Espiritu,who won the Tour title in 1996, his rookie year."Mga one and a half weeks beforeng karera magang-maga ang lalamunan ko, masakit ang kasu-kasuan ko, hindi makapag-bike.

Sherwin Diamsay survived a late charge by defending champion Victor Espiritu to rule the second leg of the 4th Cycling Search Invitational: 1st Governor Josie dela Cruz, "Taas Noo, Bulakenyo" in Malolos, Bulacan over the weekend.
The 28-year-old skipper of Hubert Hubs & Wheels peeled away right after the starting gun, leaving the rest of the pack by more than a minute, with Espiritu struggling to get away from a large second group.
By the 11th lap, the 32-year old Espiritu, team captain of Philippine Army, had narrowed the gap to a mere 20 seconds, and in the succeeding sprint lap, Espiritu was up by a bike.
But Diamsay, a native of Pura, Tarlac and Espiritu'steammate in the defunct Pagcor trade team, stuck with Espiritu the rest of the way in the 24-km, triangular criterium race.
Espiritu earned 31 points, including 10 points awarded to him as the last-lap winner, to bring his total to 36, a mere point ahead of first-leg winner Rodolfo Malangsa of Diony Auto Shop, who had a 35.
