That was the best advice Vicki Muller received when she became manager of the Erie National Wildlife Refuge on Aug. 5.
Muller succeeded Patty Nagel, who retired in 2012. Muller grew up on her family's 20-acre property in Medina County, Ohio. She competed in hunting trials as a child and then received her bachelor's degree in wildlife management from Ohio State University. Muller worked for Aransas Wildlife National Refuge in Texas before accepting her position at the 8,800-acre Crawford County preserve, which is currently closed because of the government's current budget crisis. Still, Vicki Muller, a crane specialist at Aransas, said the health of the birds has been good.
"I can definitely tell you the whooping cranes we're seeing have bright white feathers and that indicates they're in good condition," she said just before the surveys were made.

"Cranes absolutely love roasted acorns," wildlife refuge specialist Vicki Muller told Postmedia News on Tuesday.
"We're trying to provide them with as much protein and other resources as possible." The managed fires in the area, located north of Corpus Christi, don't damage the oak trees but burn the underbrush and roast the fallen acorns, said Muller. The additional food should help the cranes build up energy reserves to stay healthy during the unusually dry winter and make their return to trip to Canada this spring, she added.
