Verna Harrison
Executive Director
Verna Harrison was hired as The Campbell Foundation's first Executive Director in 2003. Prior to working at the Foundation, Verna was the Assistant Secretary of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources for 20 years, serving under Governors Hughes, Schaeffer and Glendening. She began her career as staff on the Maryland Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee, and then became the Legislative Officer of the Maryland Department of Transportation. She served for four years as Assistant Legislative Officer for Governor Hughes.
Growing up in Bethesda, Maryland, Verna graduated from the University of Maryland with highest honors. She uses her background and passion for the Bay to regularly bring key players together to develop strategic ideas for addressing the top pollutants to the Bay, highlighting advocacy and campaign opportunities. Verna appreciates the opportunity to help guide the Foundation's efforts to accelerate restoration of the Chesapeake Bay.
Verna stresses the need for collaboration among the environmental community. She serves as the Co-Chair of the Chesapeake Bay Funders Network (CBFN), composed of 28 members, totaling nearly $1.1 billion in assets. CBFN was awarded a Critical Impact Award in 2009 by the Council on Foundations.
Outside of work, Verna enjoys kayaking, boating, traveling, snow skiing, and most outdoor activities. Verna is a Board member of the Harry Hughes Center for Agro-Ecology, and is a past Board member of the YWCA of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County, in which she has remained active and received the Maggie Boone Leadership Award for her service as Board member and Treasurer. She lives in Annapolis, on the Magothy River with her husband Bob, and Verna's daughter Katie lives in London.

Verna Harrison (Campbell Foundation)
Verna Harrison, the first director of the Campbell Foundation, a major supporter of Chesapeake region environmental work, and formerly a longtime Maryland environmental official, is retiring at the end of this year.
Harrison, who has directed the environmentally focused foundation since 2003, said she expected she would still be engaged in Chesapeake Bay issues, but at a less-intense pace than she had been running for the last few decades so that she could spend more time with her family.
"As one of my friends at the Maryland Department of Natural Resources recently stated, I plan to follow the advice of a river: slow down and meander, stay current and go with the flow," she said in a foundation press release.
Few who know Harrison well are surprised that, even in retirement, she is determined to work on the issues closest to her heart.

"Thanks to Verna and her team, the Bay's future is brighter, organizations throughout the watershed are better organized and prepared to meet the challenges of Bay restoration and protection, and our foundation's mission has been immeasurably advanced," Samantha Campbell said.
