Vera Ion's youshine.youarebeautiful and Mihaela Michailov's Family Offline will be presented, in U.S. Premiere, as a double bill of staged readings on the evening of May 24, at the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York.
Family Offline will be directed by Katrin Hilbe. youshine.youarebeautiful will be performed by playwright Vera Ion, under the direction of Marcy Arlin.
youshine.youarebeautiful is a one-woman show, written and performed by Vera Ion as an internal monologue.
These women don't speak too much of discrimination against women in the theatre (other than an offer to sit on the lap of a producer, which Ion rejected), but Ion comments that perhaps this is because she works outside the mainstream, in alternative venues, where women's plays are touching on a universal sense of outsiderness that young people, artists, minorities, and children are feeling; this is new to the Romanian theatre.
Vera Ion's (b. 1981) YOUSHINE.YOUAREBEAUTIFUL, also deals with another unforeseen consequence of Romanian Communism: the anxiety of young people constantly at war with themselves over their worth, place in society, and ability to earn a living. This one-woman show, written and performed as an internal monologue by Ion, emerged from the Write Yourself program of theatre artists working with community members . Based on her student experiences busking for English pounds on the streets of London, Ion dresses as Peter Pan and, since there is a new law against making balloon animals, she panhandles by having her picture taken by a diverse cast of Londoners. Approached by a Romanian pimp and his crew, she abandons the job swamped by guilt and confusion about her friends, her family, her career, and her country. The play touches on the theme of surviving as an artist, "learning by making mistakes," and the question of the Romanian immigrant in the West. And in spite of all the craziness, as a vulnerable young woman in a near miss with street crime and exploitation, she felt liberated and "closer to the audience.
Vera Ion was born in Bucharest, in 1981. She graduated Theatre Directing at the National University of Theatre and Cinematography, Bucharest, in 2007. She also did an MA at the Goldsmiths University of London, in 2009, studying Cross Sectoral and Community Arts. She works in theatre, directing, writing and facilitating theatre workshops and projects based on generating new text and storytelling. She is a founding member of tangaProject and The Offensive of Generosity, togehter with whom she developed community arts projects both as theatre director and writer during 2005-2008. She writes for theatre: RedBull (Green Hours, Bucuresti; 59@59Theare New York), Vitamins (Teatrul Foarte Mic, Bucuresti; The Belgrade national Theatre; Stony Brook University, New York), Ich Clown ( written together with Sorin Poama, part of the project Write about you, produced by the Turet Theatre Group and performed in the Bucharest Independent theatre scene), youshine.youarebeautiful (also part of the project Write about you), Me and Cristina (a horror theatre piece also produced by the Turet Theatre Group and performed in the Bucharest Independent theatre scene),Saving sam (in production). She also works as a facilitator and trainer in the ongoing workshop Write about you, a playwriting workshop based on personal stories. Me, Vera Ion (still in costume), Mihaela Michailov, Katrin Hilbe, Marcy Arlin

On Thursday, May 24th, the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York and Immigrants' Theatre Project presented Eastern European Playwrights: Women Write the New, an evening of showings by the Romanian playwrights Vera Ion and Mihaela Michailov.
Vera performed her one-woman show, youshine.youarebeautiful, directed by Marcy Arlin, and there was a staged reading of Mihaela's Family Offline, directed by Katrin Hilbe.
But from what I gathered that evening, Vera and Mihaela are dealing with topics that are very immediate and personal and not widely discussed in their country.
