Morrisville, NC (January 4, 2002) The Carolina Courage has acquired Venus James, a member of the 2001 WUSA Champion San Jose CyberRays, and released Mikka Hansen, in compliance with the WUSA roster size guidelines.

James, a member of the U.S. Under-21 National Team in 2000, was waived by San Jose on December 31st.She played in 11 games for the CyberRays, starting nine of them.A two-sport athlete at UCLA, James ranks third on UCLA's career scoring (81) list.She is second in career assists with 26, and fourth in goals scored with 30.
"We are very excited by the acquisition of Venus James," said Courage Head Coach Marcia McDermott.

Soccer star Venus James ,97 was one of several female athletes who told personal stories about their experiences in sports, and discussed ways to promote equal access on and off the field.

After graduating from O,Dowd James, 26, attended UCLA, where she was one of the first African American women to play on the soccer team.She continued playing soccer with the San Jose CyberRays and the Carolina Courage, and also played two years in a Swedish women,s soccer league.
James talked about equal treatment of ethnic athletes.
