Vanessa Cato of The Church of the Good Shepherd will become the official priest Saturday in Ogden. Despite her lack of regard for formalities, Cato will become official in her calling in a ceremony at 11 a.m. today at the church, 2374 Grant Ave., in Ogden. At an institution ceremony complete with crumpets from her home country of England, Cato will officially become the rector of the Ogden church she has already served for five months. Hayashi said Cato also is a "delightful people person. He said he knows Cato will come to love Ogden and that he's sure Ogden will love her, too. But Cato said it didn't take her long to feel at home in this community. "I really like living here," she said. "I found people very friendly. My neighbor changed the light bulb on my car the other day for just the cost of the bulb." Cato already has joined the Rotary, Interfaith Works and Coalition of Religious Communities. And if dropping her English accent wasn't tricky enough, Cato also is working on learning Spanish. "Here at Good Shepherd, we are building up our children's work and strengthening our relationships with the Latino congregation," she said. Cato said she loves her work at the church, although she admits it's very hard work. The congregation has set clear goals for the next year and the next 10 years. "There's only been a few times I've felt homesick," generally when she wanted chocolate. She said food in the United States is too sweet. Cato said her church tries to be as much a part of the community as its members are able. "We hope that link will continue to grow," she said. Also, she's hoping the community will support her church in its effort to preserve its historical building. Cato said members need $100,000 to replace the mortar. "We've already raised $36,000 from within the church," she said. (JaNae Francis/Standard-Examiner) Rev.
