Valda James former Mayor of Islington Valda James former Mayor of Islington In 1986 she became the first black woman to be elected to Islington Council, where she applied her knowledge and experience of being a single parent to her work on the Social Services committee. Just two years later she rose to position of Mayor and her daughter took the post of Deputy Mayor.
