Dr Anthony Bleetman, Consultant in Accident and Emergency Medicine at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital said: "Ambulance crews will usually take multiple-injured patients to the right hospital, not necessarily the nearest hospital. There is little point in taking a severely injured victim to a small hospital with no senior doctors, CT scanner, intensive care unit or surgical team. There is little point in taking a severely injured victim to a small hospital with no senior doctors, CT scanner, intensive care unit or surgical team. In trauma-receiving hospitals, doctors and nurses will be trained and competent in trauma management. They will be supported by surgical teams, scanners and intensive care facilities."

Dr Bleetman added that emergency care had improved significantly in recent years - across the whole country.
