Establishment of Liz's Legacy - Liz's Legacy
Dave Karnes made an initial gift to establish the fund, said Tom Thompson, director of development, UNMC Eppley Cancer Center.
Even though the fund is just beginning, Thompson said several businesses have already indicated they want to be a part of the fund-raising efforts on behalf of Liz's Legacy.
Two of the local Hy-Vee grocery stores have expressed a desire to participate in Liz's Legacy
Thompson is working with the University of Nebraska at Omaha hockey team and several local businesses on possible fund-raising initiatives.
said the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center hopes to kickoff this effort at the Maverick Stampede on Oct. 10 and 11, when three hockey powers - the University of Minnesota, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of Maine
- will visit the new Qwest Center Omaha to compete against UNO in an early season tournament.
"This initiative only goes forward with involvement and support of the Karnes family," Thompson

Officers of the Loup Valley Road Riders presented a check in the amount of $2,250 to Eppley Cancer Center representative Tom Thompson July 13.

On hand to receive the check was Tom Thompson, Senior Director of Development for Eppley Cancer Center, UNMC.
"I always enjoy the opportunity to visit with the people out here about a disease we wish we didn't have to know anything about," said Thompson
In thanking the group for their contribution, Thompson
noted that though the center is in Omaha, Eppley
is "Nebraska's cancer center - from east to west.
also informed the group in attendance that relations are being formalized to try and make clinical trials available at hospitals all across the state, so people don't have to go clear to Omaha for their treatments.
says that is a few years out.
"Your dollars are important - private dollars play an important role in the research process," Thompson
told the road riders.
"We have some big plans and lofty goals in terms of where we want the cancer center to go in the coming years."
says the master plan is to build a cancer campus, so to speak, which would house all the cancer center facilities in one building rather than the seven currently used.
"That is a $100 million project."
"Efforts like this and people across Nebraska who come together like this, is what gives us the inspiration to do projects like this," said Thompson
