Thomas McKay
Tom McKay is Director of RF Innovation, GLOBALFOUNDRIES Design Solutions Engineering in Santa Clara, California. Tom is an IC designer, architect and technologist with over 25 years' experience in wireless design and innovation. In 1999, Tom co-founded Zeevo, leading RF development on the first single-chip 180 nm CMOS Bluetooth RF SoC, shipping in volume to tier 1 customers; Zeevo was acquired by Broadcom in 2005. As Principal Engineer with RF Micro Devices (now Qorvo), Tom invented compact, frequency agile RF filters with Q's over 200, demonstrated in 2007 at the 90 nm node. Tom drove RFSOI development for cellular front-ends from a design perspective, now widely utilized in smart phone antenna switches and tuners. In 2009 Tom joined MStar (now part of MediaTek), where he patented and developed multi-mode, multi-band cellular CMOS receiver techniques. Tom has held positions of Senior Manager at Samsung Semiconductor, Staff Scientist at WJ Communications and Sr. Principal Engineer at MStar. As RF Innovation Director Tom now leads RF path-finding efforts focused on the synergy between system design and GLOBALFOUNDRIES process technologies to address new market needs through early-phase hardware demonstrators. Tom holds an MSEE from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is a Senior Member of the IEEE and is inventor on over 13 US patents.

Tom McKayTelencommAbstract : New architectures targeting highly-integrated 0.18m m CMOS transceivers demand high second-order intercepts and low-noise downconversion.Additionally , conventional NMOS devices suffer from back-gate effects , degrading performance through a reduction in high-frequency output resistance and bias-dependent output capacitance.Means of circumventing these effects is critical in wide dynamic range environments.New power-to-voltage conversion CMOS topologies provide a low power solution that meets second order intercept and low noise requirements at 2.4GHz.Biography : As the RF Design Manager of Telencomm , Inc. , Mr. McKay is a key contributor to the company's vision of highly integrated CMOS RF solutions.He is responsible for establishing RF technology and key circuit functionality ; leading a world-class RF team in the design and implementation of innovative radio architectures.Prior to co-founding Telencomm , Inc. , Mr. McKay was a Principal Engineer at VLSI Technology , Inc. where he led a 0.2 micron RF technology development team , pioneering work in the characterization and modeling of CMOS devices to 40 GHz and applying these ground-breaking results to high performance wireless system designs.Prior to VLSI , Tom McKay held various positions at Watkins-Johnson Wireless Products Group , Samsung Microwave Semiconductor , Fujitsu Compound Semiconductor , Harris Microwave , and Teledyne Monolithic Microwave.McKay holds the BSEE and MSEE from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.He is a published author and holds two patents.Updated 9/30/00
