"We are excited about the result, but concerned about what work on the Causeway could do to business," Tom Guertner, owner of Periwinkles Restaurant, said.

It's more of a friendly competition," said Tom Guertner, owner of Periwinkles on Main Street."But it is nice to win and have bragging rights."Guertner said he likes his chances again next Saturday, but he said the real winners are always the chowder lovers who get to indulge their taste buds."We have won it numerous times, so if someone else wins it's OK," he said."They control everything," Guertner said.

"It feels great," said owner Tom Guertner, who opened Periwinkles the Causeway in Essex in 1996.
One year, because the restaurant had won so many times, Guertner said, Periwinkle's was asked not to be on the ballot. These accomplishments are proudly posted on the restaurant's Web site, while all the plaques the restaurant won from past competitions are on display in Periwinkle's lobby. Guertner expects to get the new plaque sometime in December. During the summer the restaurant can sell up to five to 10 gallons of clam chowder a day, Guertner said. "We are known for our clam chowder," he said. "It is constantly our No. 1 seller." Is there any secret to winning the clam chowder competition? "It is the same recipe as when we opened," said Guertner.
