Tom Coates, vice president of the Des Moines-based Truth About Gambling Foundation, said he's displeased the universities are investing more than $1.1 million in Station Casinos, which owns casinos mostly around Las Vegas.
"I think it's sending the wrong message out," Coates said."It's a small condoning of an industry."

Tom Coates, a founder of The Truth About Gambling Foundation and owner of Consumer Credit Counselors of Des Moines, the largest such service in Iowa, said several studies have show that "gambling is the fastest growing driver of bankruptcy in this country."
"It's my personal experience," Coates said, "that 10 to 15 percent of bankruptcies are due to gambling problems."

Coates says the gaming proponents fail to mention that other economic gaming studies have shown that although in the immediate 1–mile radius of a casino, financial benefits are significant, but as the radius from the casino expands it eventually becomes a negative effect on the economy.
Coates cites studies that say that for every dollar generated by a casino, "you have a $2 loss."
"It's not just shifting money from one source to another," Coates said."It's that it's terribly destructive to those who participate in it."

Tom Coates of Norwalk, president of the Truth About Gambling Foundation, an anti-casino group, said state regulators should impose at least a $10,000 fine upon casinos for nonenforcement of the trespass program.
"I have had too many reports of someone joining Gamblers Anonymous and banning themselves and then falling off the wagon. The family members call the casinos and say, 'You know, my father or husband is out there and he is gambling,' and the casinos do nothing," Coates said.

Tom Coates, director of Consumer Credit of Des Moines and a longtime gambling opponent, said it is hard to gin up enthusiasm for what appears, at this point, to be a lost cause.
"People like myself, and many others that see the problems of gambling, are just so discouraged," he said. "Paid lobbyists swarm over legislators like locusts. I think they've kind of beat down the opposition. It's so entrenched and so tied into both political parties that there's not much that can be done."
Coates said the perception is that the state and local governments are seeing large economic benefits from gambling. However, he said, several studies show that is not the case.
"The casinos are actually a negative economic generator," he said.
